The files on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs kept at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica mainly cover the period between 1912 and 1928, that is, the Northern Government Period. A few files either pre-date or post-date this period firstly because during the archiving process some files belonging to same categories but different foreign offices were not separated out. This decision was made for the sake of reading consistency. The other reason is that the files collected in 1999 from the embassy in Korea contain records dated up to 1943. The files are divided into forty-eight categories, according to subject matter, and include the Boxer Incident (1900) reparations, special meetings on tariffs, Sino-Russian relations, and WWI in Europe, etc.
