New Collections Open at the IMH Archives: Personal Papers of Mr. Chao Heng-ti [Zhao Hengti]趙恆惕(1880-1971)

        CHAO HENG-TI born in Hengshan, Hunan, 1880; graduate of the Japanese Military Cadets’ College in Tokyo, Japan; joined the 1911 Revolution and became Commander-in-Chief of Hunan Provincial Forces, 1916; Military Governor of Hunan, 1923; Civil Governor of Hunan 1923-26. During the Northern Expedition of the Nationalist Army in 1926, he allied with the Peking Government and was defeated by the Southern Forces; he withdrew from politics and the military soon afterwards and turned his attention to the study of numerology and meditation.

        After having retreated to Taiwan along with the Nationalist government in 1949, he further immersed himself in the study of Buddhist canonical scriptures and upholding the Three Jewels of Buddhism. He was deeply involved in the Buddhist Association, Taipei Shandao Temple, and Ci En Pagoda at Nantou. Chao fraternized with leading Buddhists such as Master Yin-shun, Janggya hotogtu, the Venerable Ci Hang and Elder Upasaka Lee Ping-nan. This collection comprises of materials provided by Mr. Chao during the oral history interviews by this Institute in the 1960s. It covers the period from 1948 to 1967 and there are 77 volumes.
